Unless you’ve emptied your Recycle Bin or held down the shift key while deleting the file, it should be in Recycle Bin. Double-click recycle bin on your desktop, click on the file you want to restore, then on the menu click File, Restore.

To add onto answer #1… If the recycle bin has been emptied or if the file was deleted from the DOS prompt, it won’t be there. Go to http://www.download.com and search for “undelete”. You can find some utilities to undelete / recover the file(s). Or just go out and buy the Norton Utilities for Windows ($50 bucks). It provides execellent protection against accidental deletes like this and can recover files deleted from DOS as well.

      Good luck.

If you can get your hands on an old DOS version of Norton Utilties, there is a utility that can undelete files by actually looking at the hard drive. If this cannot undelete the file, there is also a disk edit tool that you can use to manually recover the file (or at least parts of it). Remember these utilities write directly to the hard drive so you will need to use the lock command to prevent Windows from intercepting.
