Recover back-up data

By dennisbv ·
I need to recover our Exchange public store so I can retrieve so contact info that a department lost. We had to rebuild our Exchange databases and the person that extracted the public folder info did not verify that he got all the information. Now I have to try and recover it. We use Vertas for our back ups and our Exchange server is the only server with a tape drive. What sugestions do you have to recover this info?

I was thinking about installing Exchange on another server and recovering my backup to that server. Then extract and verify the information.
What thoughts or tips do you have.

I have put a higher number of points on this so I can accept multiple answers

Sounds like you're on the right path. I'd recommend installing on another machine, and then unplugging it from the network so you don't create too many minor issues. Make sure you go into the properties of the Exchange databases, and check the box for "allow this database to be overwritten" so that when you do the restore, you won't be chasing your tail. Good luck.

One more thing...sorry...if you shutdown the exchange services, and copy the active database files to a backup location, you can sometimes copy the "restored" copies to the "running" directory, restart the services, and then recover the items you need. Then, stop the services again...copy the "original" files back to the running directory, start the services...restore the recovered items...and pat yourself on the back
