Recover dual boot after drive conversion

By lrwhite ·
After installing win2000 and win98 using partion magic to partion the drive, I noticed thru neglect or default Fat 16 was used. I decided to use the drive converter to convert to Fat32. After succesful conversion of both systems my master boot record was changed and I could not dual boot. How can I regain my dual boot short of reinstalling one or both systems?

Hi - more of a question than answer. Does Win 2000 support FAT32? I know Win NT 4.0 didn't / doesn't as I remember. I think you needed at a minimum a small FAT16 to hold boot data. Win 98 could be in that partition or in a separate with FAT32 and Win NT in a third.

If your documentation doesnt cover such as what happened , go to the "PM" site and contact customer support. The Partitian Magic team is very good and want to know when a bug crops up , if it is a bug , likely you overlooked a step , or precaution. The new PM allows recovery from just about every angle , I hope you backed up the stuff you wanted in case it doesn't fly , or the "Fix" causes data loss. Personally the other note here addresses the possibility of a fat issue, I agree , as it defaulted to 16, suggesting a cross viewing/read problem , and the step was to reduce or eleminate data loss. Like I said , contact customer support at Partitian Magic to resolve it , as at this point you might lose data if not handled carefully. Hope it is easy.

A thought, I must ask , are you using the new version of Partician Magic? I have the older one and it is really limited in comparason to the 5 or above which can do it's work within Windows , eleminating the need to go to Dos. If you are using my version which requires operation in Dos, then 2000 has a problem with Dos and this may have caused the issue , and it is paramount you contact Partitian Magic to enlist their help to resolve it. I like the abov answer best, but if that'isn't what you used, and and didn't somehow make a backup of the mbe, then I beleive you're stuck with running the repair option with 2000 setup.

Is there a reason you are not using Version 5. I have always found that using the most recent version of a piece of software was of the greatest benefit.

Good Luck
