Recover public folders from .edb files

By PCI Tech ·
What is the tool or process that I can use to recover mailboxes and public folders from .edb files?

The server that crashed was running Windows 2000 Server with Exchange 5.5.

Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery:

***You must have a good copy of the latest edb files: dir.edb, priv.edb and pb.edb***

1. Build a new exchange system from scratch
2. Add new exchange to the domain
3. Stop ALL exchange services
4. Not Required, but highly recommended: Run exchange optimizer and put the databases on a drive other than the system drive.
For example: I have a system with 3 drives; C, D and E. during the optimization C retains only the Internet Mail Service Files, D has both the Information Store Logs and Directory Service Logs and everything else is on the D drive. The only other component I would consider leaving on C is the Message Transfer Agent.
5. Identify the location of the edb files on the new system (What drive are they on, the directory structure will be the same)
6. Copy the saved edb files as follows:
a) dir.edb to the EXCHSRVR\DSADATA directory
b) priv.edb & pub.edb to the EXCHSRVR\MDBDATA directory
7. Delete all log files from DSADATA & MDBDATA folders
8.Run the following CLI utilities:
(c:\winnt\system32) eseutil /r /ds
eseutil /r /is
eseutil /r
(c:\exchsrvr\bin) isinteg ?patch
9. Reboot system and ensure all services start.

You must login as admin in your exchange server - and go to the .EDB (there was another one with .stm extension) right click=>Properties and search through the tabs for the Options: "Enable this file to be replaced by Restore" =>turn it on and do a Restore
You can use ESEUTIL - checks, diagnoses, and repairs problems at the database level.

Try to start the exchange services. The should fail but you will end up with two or three services left (System Attendant, and something else)

At a command prompt, set your path to include C:\Exchsrvr\bin. (path C:\Exchsrvr\bin;%PATH%)

Use "ISINTEG -pri -test allacltests -verbose" (check private information store) then "ISINTEG -pub -test allacltests -verbose" (check public information store) to verify your databases are OK. Any queries on ISINTEG simply type ISINTEG without anything after it and press enter.

Once they have been verified, use "ISINTEG -patch" to update your exchange installation.

You should now be able to mount the exchange databases, though you will need to assign the mailboxes back to the primary NT account from inside exchange 5.5 system administrator. (the automated systems are not reliable enough under active directory with exchange 5.5)

you can download and use the eseutil /? and it will give you a list of options. also use the istinteg application as well to help with the restore. if you download the newest exeutil from microsoft.com/exchange and under exchange 2003 tools it this versions automatically includes the isinteg.exe procedure in it which will help automatically patch the database if any problems do occur.
