Recover XP System when No access to C

By gethe ·
I have a computer with permissions for
"Everyone" for drive C have been set to All
Deny. So, the computer won't boot or anything
and the user wants to recover without losing
the data on it.. I'm assuming I can boot up
from a system CD or floppy, but then how can I
switch the permissions back from before this
user changed them?

Remote recover from Winternals might do the trick for you. It allows you to connect to that system from a bootdisk. So on the host system it will mount the drive from the problem system to a drive letter on your host system. From there you might be able to take ownership and reverse the permissions.

I don't have this product mentioned in previous answer. Anyone know of a way to do it from the win xp setup console (Dos prompt)?

You should be able to use the recovery portion of the Win XP boot disk to repair the problem. It's suppose to keep your file system in tack. I've seen it keep it in tack and a few time lose it. If you don't have a file recovery program such as Winteral or easy-recovery you don't have much choice. I don't believe you can do a SCANREG/RESTORE in DOS and back it up a few days before the rights were changed like you could in Win98, but you may want to try that anyhow. Good Luck.
