Recovering A Print Job in Windows Server 2003

By mnibert ·
I am the network admin for my company and I was pushed into the role. A user came to me today asking if there was a way for me to reprint a file from last week that he did not save. I am going to attempt to find it in the temp folder as it was a word document however I am not sure that this will work. All of our network printers are on the network which has the OS of windows server 2003. IS there a file or folder that saves the items that are printed? If so can I reprint an item. Any thoughts or tips would be much appreciated.

The spool directory by default, is

but also by default, the spool files are deleted once the document is printed.

This setting can be viewed/changed in a printer's Properties / Advanced tab / Keep Printed Documents. This is UNCHECKED by default.

If you decide to turn this on, the spool directory above could potentially grow large real fast, depending on the volume of printing done by your company, so you'll want to develop a process for periodically purging old spool files.
