Recovering of data from a formated hard drive.

    Locked

    by eadames ·

Hi everyone. I am having a problem with a hard drive that was formatted with a cd of windows XP and it used to have some important information on it, and would like to hear sugestions on what method or software option to use for the recovering of that data from it even when it was formatted, I mean if that is possible. So I will appreciate any information and help on this matter. Thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone!

I’ve had good results with r-studio but it’s a commercial program. There may be some free alternatives. Try sourceforge and search for data recovery.

A couple of questions and a suggestion

What is the system you are trying to plug the HD into to read? Is it a HD problem or is it a “I don’t have a Windows XP machine to plug it it into.”

If it is a HD problem, look at Spinright GRC.com. It is not free but probably one of the better options for disk recovery.

The disk is probably formated as either FAT or NTFS. Non Windows OS will have trouble with this.

If the data is very valuable, you may consider using a commercial recovery service. They can be very good but are very expensive USD 2,000 to 10,000.

        Good for bad sectors only

Spinright is a great program for recovering data from a drive that is getting ready to die or has alot of bad sectors. It is excellent for testing a new disk drive for possible bad sectors. However, it will not let you look at formatted or undeleted files.

Create a Windows Boot CD either from BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) or Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (http://UBCD4Win.org) which already has the following Windows recovery utilites.

Disk Investigator 1.31 – Display the true drive contents by bypassing the operating system and directly reading the raw drive sectors. View and search raw directories, files, clusters, and system sectors. Verify the effectiveness of file and disk wiping programs. Undelete previously deleted files

File Recovery 4.0 – Data recovery for damaged files and erased partitions

Free Undelete 1.0 – Data recovery program for deleted files

Handy Recovery 1.0 – Designed to restore files accidentally deleted from hard disks and floppy drives

Recovery Manager 1.5 – Backup & Restore, Duplicate, Recover files accidentally deleted or from corrupted media, and Format Digital Flash Media

      The prior list of tools…

The prior list of tools probably won’t work if you did anything more than format the drive. If you installed XP or copied any data to the formatted drive, your best bet will be to send the drive to a recovery house, and even then, it is going to be very expensive for the chance that you may not get data back, or get corrupted data.
