    Recovering Windows XP after crash

    Locked

    by ken ·

My laptop runs Windows XP Home and I installed SP2 on it when it was first released. I started it off doing a defragment on my drive last night and left it. When I returned the system had restarted itself and gone into the Boot Options menu. Since then I haven’t been able to load into Windows so it looks as if the FAT has been corrupted. I have tried using FIXBOOT, FIXMBR and CHKDSK in Recovery Console but still won’t come back. Any assistance is appreciated.

Try doing a repair with the windows setup cd see if that will fix your problem. Use the second repair option not the first one.

I have tried using the Repair function from the setup CD but it takes me into Recovery Console. Would like similar to Windows 98 repair where it writes over old files with original setup.

Microsoft has issued Knowledge Base Article 842242 listing a number of programs and games encountering problems as a result of the changes made to Windows Firewall in SP2. The article deals with how to open ports manually so the applications will work properly.

The system was running fine until the Defragment. Unable to work out what else could have caused it apart from SP2.

In the event of a crash or any other incident that leaves your computer in a nonbootable or problematic state, you can quickly restore your computer by performing the following steps:

Open Help And Support from the Start menu.
Select Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time and click Next.
Select a restore point by highlighting a day in the calendar and choosing the appropriate checkpoint
      Click Next.

I cannot get into Windows in any shape or form so cannot select for Restore. I have tried loading into Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Network, Safe Mode with Command, Last Known Good Config and Stating Normally but nothing is loading up.

get your windows cd and go to install instead of recover console then choose the repair option so you won’t loose any vital info on your system.

Answers #1 and #4 are on track. You selected first repair option which takes you into recovery console and that is not what was intended. The following link has instructions for performing a Repair Installation.

I tried this but the FAT was seriously screwed so it didn’t recognise a previous install of Windows. I cut my losses and just wiped the drive completely then restarted. Thanks for your help.
