A recovery CD is nothing more than a bootable CD loaded with your favorite utilities.

Now, some retail PCs come without the Windows and software CDs.
These often come with a recovery CD, or a recovery floppy that you use to restore the PC to the way software was loaded on it the day it shipped.

For a recovery utility CD, check out this site:

When I set my machine up I install Windows XP, drivers, and any apps or utilities. Then I image it with Norton Ghost to CD and make it bootable.
So if my system goes down for some reason, I can restore it to a basic setup in no time rather than start from scratch.
