recovery of windows 2003 primary DC

By mcantine ·
had a crash on the primary domain controller, but have other member servers that the replica resides on. So for recovery do I re-install windows 2003 server, dcpromo, install the primary domain controller as a member server into the domain and then run dcpromo and premote it?

Do you have...

a backup DC. If so you should promote it to the primary and build a new backup. You can then transfer roles if you wish.

If it is the only one then you will have to create a new DC and then restore the data. Here are some links:

I have a backup DC

I do have a backup DC, so I just promote it, rebuild the primary as the new backup DC and then once finished re-promote the backup as the primary and demote the other one?

Yes...

you can go that route. I tend to just promote the backup, leave it, and build a new backup. Make sure you seize all of the roles from the primary.
