Recovery Technique

What is the preferred method of recovery for an application sever. Install the application and then recovery the data only to the application, or if we backup the entire machine, including settings, recovery solely from our backup?

That it is usually easiest for me to load the bare OS, then restore the apps, settings and data from the tape. It might actually be easier to do a full disaster recovery from tape, but I have never tried that.
