redhat linux 7.3 server : mail problem

By meeva ·
My linux server sometimes does not receive mail. When this happens the following errors are recorded inthe maillog

(1) daemon MTA: Problem creating SMTP socket
(2) NoQueue: Syserr (rrot): Opendaemon Socket: Daem daemon MTA: CANNOT BIN ADDRESS ALREADY IN USE
WHAT CAUSES THIS?

Do you have anything running in conjunction with mail program? Which program are you running? Sendmail, Postfix, Qmail? I sometimes get this error as well, but I'm using MailScanner in conjunction with Sendmail. In my case, I have to stop Sendmail and then restart MailScanner in order to workaround this issue. Does this happen randomly or after you do something in particular? What happens in the mail and system logs right before you get these errors?

This is likely caused by the other MTA timeout or someone testing out why their
sendmail can't connect. Do a telnet to your server on port 25

telnet your_server_name 25

and you should get a welcome message from sendmail. Enter

ehlo your_server_name

and you will receive a list of output. Type quit to end the dialog. This will tell you if sendmail is running. It will also cause a message in maillog similar to your problem.

IF U R USING SENDMAIL:
You will also need to edit the sendmail config files in /etc/mail/
Comment out the lines that say:

O DaemonPortOptions=Family=inet6, address=::, Name=MTA6, M=O
O DaemonPortOptions=Family=inet6, address=::1, Port=587, Name=MSA6, M=O,
M=E

As you can see they instruct the sendmail daemon to open inet6 ports
(for which you no longer have support).

After that restart sendmail and everything should work again :)
