reformat HD on Compaq Deskpro w/o CD-ROM

By jdamico ·
Ran a surface scan on Compaq Deskpro this morning b'cse it was having startup problems; it found 17 bad sectors (in addition to 3 already there). The PC does not have a CD-ROM. Would like to try re-formatting the HD but would like to know if anyone has successfully copied entire HD data out and then back again after formatting? I do not have Windows diskettes to reinstall the OS. Maybe a ghosting program? Thanks!

The program "Ghost" works well. You can either clone your drive to another drive or you can make a Ghost image file of you drive (this file will need to stored on another drive) then after you format your drive you can boot from a floppy with Ghost on it and restore your drive. Make sure you use the Ghost program to make the bootable Ghost floppy. Ghost is made by Symantec and cost about $50.

The simplist way to do what you want would be to install the drive as a slave in another PC with the same OS version.

Copy the drive into a folder on the other PCs hard drive. The only files that will give you problems is the Favorites folder, as Windows thoughfully combines all favorite files on a system into one.

I would then boot from a floppy, and fdisk /mbr, and then remove the partitions, and repartition the drive.
Format with the /s switch to transfer the system files.
Then, copy the files back onto the drive.

You will need to boot from the floppy, and use fdisk to set the partition as active once you have the drive back in the original PC.
