First of all

Switch it off and don't use it!
Did you format the entire HDD or just a partition? It might be that the stuff you need is on a separate partition. Our company laptops have two partitions, with the "Documents and Settings" on which allows for a machine to be rebuilt without the need to backup user files.

Failing this, you may need to send the disk away or buy some recovery software. Googling "harddisk recovery after format" returns numerous links. I'm afraid I cannot recommend any as I have not been in your situation.

Good luck.

I can

recommend PC Tools file recover software, it costs around ?23 and has got out of the doggy doo doo more than once.
However you must appreciate that the more data you write on the hard drive now the less chance you have of recovering anything. And even if this software detects your deleted files there is no guarantee that they can be recovered.

I've only ever found 1 tool to recover data after a format

by OH Smeg In reply to Reformatted Laptop

But it's not at all easy to use. It's called X Way and it can do Forensic Recovery.

I don't know if it will be of any use to you because of the complexity involved in using it but it's relatively cheap and available here

Well cheap for what it is.

R-studios. Pretty good, not that expensive. Capable of forensic recovery. You get what you pay for.
