You can get the product key at the back of the booklet supplied together with your PC. Or if its some Branded PCs get it at the Top of your PC, theres a sticker writen windows 98 prod. key. If you dont get it from there then i think you will have to contact microsoft for the registration of that particular product.
Otherwise, i would like to know what edition this is, you can contact me thru. my e-adress,

The product key is NOT on the Windows CD.

There is an algorithm in the installer that verifies that the key you entered is a valid key for that version and distribution of Windows.

If your system still runs, you should be able to recover the product key from the registry.

One easy way to do this, is to download and run Belarc Advisor.

If you cannot access the registry, then you need to find your original documentation.

As a side note, if your version of W98 is an OEM copy, you need to contact the original system manufacture for any Windows support issues.

If you do need to contact MS, they will want that number that is printed around the center hub of the CD. But Belarc will recover it if the system still boots.

If you meant reg. number as the product key, there are a number of ways. I am also assuming the Product Key in the current Windows belongs to the original Windows CD.

1. If you can boot to Windows, open Windows Explorer. Make sure to check on ?Show all files? and uncheck ?Hide file extensions for known file types?.
Open C:\Windows\System.dat with Word or WordPad. Search for ?ProductKey? without the quotes. Please note that the ProductKey is one word and there is no space.

2. If you cannot boot to Windows, boot the computer with a Windows 98 startup disk and navigate to C:\windows and use the following commands.
Attrib ?s ?h System.dat
Edit System.dat
Search for ?ProductKey? without the quotes.
If the Registry is large, Edit command may not work. If this is the case, you need to connect the HD to a different computer and use the first method.

3. You can use a Registry editor to find the Product Key whether you can boot to Windows or not.

4. You can use software such as Belarc Advisor or Aida32.

If you need more help, please add a comment.

If the machine runs and you have access to the net, download Magic Jelly Bean Key Finder V1.41. This I think I got from (good freeware site), it is in the utilities section. If it isn't e-mail me: and I'll email you a copy. This works with win98 and win2000.
