Regarding Symantec Web Security

By ask_anurag ·

I have windows 2000 advanced server with active directory installed and also 30 Windows 2000 professional clients.I heard that if I installed the Symantec web security then I can restrict my users not to use internet and they have to take permission to access internet and opening even mail accounts.
But how I configure in Windows 2000 server and the also in the client.

Basically Web Security (at least the part you're interested in) works just like MS ISA, MS Proxy server etc: as a forward proxy.
Several sets of measures are needed to make this work.
1) Configure Web Security in such a way that there is no default Internet connection from the users desktops. Probably the Symantec standard settings; technically we talk about NAT, firewall, port filter etc.
2) Configure the PC's IE settings to use the Symantec box as a proxy.
3) In the proxy, probably you can have the users pre-authenticate with their Active Directory account but maybe you need a small Symantec client for that on each desktop. Without the client, users might have to type userid/password again.
4) Also in the proxy, you configure what each user (or group) is allowed to and what not. E.g. sites, hotmail yes/no, maybe even content filtering on certain URL's or types of (offensive...) content.

At your service,
