Registry cannot load the hive

by tferguson2 . Updated 17 years, 11 months ago

My setup:

Dell Optiplex GX280
Windows XP Pro SP2
Pentium 4
1GB RAM

I received the following error:

Registry cannot load the hive \SystemRoot\system32\config\SOFTWARE

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable
Dumping Physical Memory

Memory Address: c0000218

I followed the process defined by Microsoft for recovering the registry http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

It worked for about 1 day, then the error came back, and computer is once again unbootable. Just for the fun of it, I followed the recovery steps again, but only replaced the “SOFTWARE” file, restarted the computer and it booted. I just decided, for good measures, to wipe out the computer and start over (nothing to lose).

My question is (as I’m afraid this may happen on other computers running similar software/hardware):

Does anyone know what specifically can cause that file to become corrupt?
