Registry Checker Error

By lathe ·
While starting one Win98 PC, an error message comes in Windows Registry Checker Popup "Windows encouuntered an error accessing the system registy.
Whindows will restart and repair the system registry for you." there is only one option "OK", if I click on "OK" it restarts and comes up with the same message, I can work on the PC with the message on screen, but how can I solve the problem.

Thanks in advance.

No you shouldnt work with that error. Coz if it fails then your data cant be recovered.
Solution
Go to Start,Accessories, System tools, System Information. There in the options you have registry checker use that and rest follows.

When Windows is booting, immediately after the bios check, hit the f8 key, and boot into
"safe mode command prompt"

at the c:\windows prompt, type in
scanreg /fix

This should repair the registry at the most basic level, and clear the error for you.

Reboot windows, then run scanregw at the command prompt.

This sequence may have to be repeated once or twice to repair all the damaged or missing registry entries, but it saves you the hassle of manually editing the registry or buying a third party program.

Make sure you do not have mismatched RAM (EDO and Non-EDO). Your RAM could be causing the registry to be damaged while loaded in RAM.
If your pagefile is static then cold boot to DOS and delete the pagefile. Do a search before you shutdown, usuallyit leaves at the root of whichever drive was chosen. In DOS it should be read as pagefi~1.sys. After deleting and restarting windows will create a new pagefile. I suggested this because I've seen the pagefile be corrupt.
That's all for now, i may have more info later.

In my practice it means problem with RAM memory, try to replace it and check again.

First , deep scan for a virus/Worm from Dos, if negative , still in a Dos Prompt , go to C:\Windows , after getting to that point type in SCANREG /OPT (NT has a different version), this optomizes the registry by dumping the dross and bad keys (I assume you already have gone in , in Safe Mode to assertian the status of your Device manager)If you simply reinstall Win over the current setup to replace drivers , likely the only thing you will lose is settings in Windows, and do a "Full" scan with scandisk before normal operations afterwards .
