When opening the Control panel > systems Icon. I choose the Environment tab, I get the following message "Cannot open USER Environment section in Registry. Possible registry. Is this recoverable?

You may have to reinstall the operating system. Try that to see if it works.

Hope this helps.

Depending upon when the registry became corrupted you may be able to recover. Go to the "run" menu and run regedit. Export your current registry to a file so you will have a backup of it. Then reboot your computer in command prompt mode. Type in scanreg /restore This will allow you to choose a registry from an earlier date when your computer was working properly. Keep in mind that any new programs you have installed since the date listed in the registry restore will need to be reloaded so if you think an earlier copy of the registry won't solve your problem, then this won't do you any good.

I had to use the scanreg /restore as noted in #2. I have Windows 98se. It was a lifesaver.

Good luck.
