registry disapears?

By Grumpyroger ·
When I type regedit in the run box, it will pop up then just disapear, I can't access it at all, nor will my msconfig come up, (I can access that in SAFE mode) I have an eMachine 2.0ghz, 512meg DDR Ram, 40gig HD. I just can't figure it out. Short of completely re formatting the hard drive what can I do?

What did you see in your virus scan of that system?

Does the system have the same behavior with Regedt32?

I am assuming that you are logging on with an administrator account.

First things first. Previous response alluded to part of this.

1. Boot into safe mode, disable all startup items and reboot into normal mode.

2. Run a virus scan with current definitions.

3. Check for adware with updated versions of both Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are freeware and available at download.com.

Have seen adware disable msconfig. That or a virus could also be problem with regedit.

If none of this is effective, we'll try something else.

Those are symptoms of the Klez virus. This is a URL to Symantec's site: http://securityresponse1.symantec.com/sarc/sarc.nsf/html/w32.klez.gen@mm.html

Since there are several variants, you'll have to run one of their standalones to see which one it is. The rest of the page will guide you to whichever fix you need.
