registry error ???

by TheChas In reply to registry error ???

Which version of Windows?

Windows 98 and Me can have a problem with more than 511MB of RAM installed.

While Microsoft claims the error starts at 512MB, I have seen numerous systems have problems with just 512MB.

The bug is VERY configuration dependant, and installing the driver could very well trigger it.

Next, is the boot drive connected to the IDE or RAID controller?
For W98 and Me, you need to have Windows fully installed and stable before moving the drives over to the raid controller.
For W2K and XP, as long as you followed the process at installation for the controller driver, you should be okay.

The same thought occurred to me, however, it is not a memory issue, since I took out one of the 128 Mb sticks and booted up with only 128 MB installed. The problem remained.
as for your other questions yes, yes, and yes.

hopefully you can get to the above site (seems to hang for me at about 75% loaded).... the brief that appears with the above link:

Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath? value points to ... IntelATA.MPD must exist in <windir>\system\iosubsys ... If a value that does not exist ...

.pl is Poland

For some reason, I can only get the link to work with Netscape 4.79... It won't open fully with IE 5.5?

At any rate, the specific path leads directly to an 19 page MS Word document (in English) that begins thus:

Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver Setup v6.0

Production Candidate Release
V6.00.007

OEM Release Notes, March 10, 2000

1. Product Overview 2
2. Change History 3
1. Limitations, Known Problems, and Compatibility Issues 5
2. System Requirements 63. Supported Installation Scenarios 6
4. Installation Instructions 6
5. Verifying Correct Installation 7
6. Removing the Software 8
7. Installer Setup Flags 8
8. OEM Customization Using the SETUPCFG.SYS File 10
9. Intel Ultra ATA Companion 17

You don't say which version of Windows you are using... but it has specific instructions for each.

Ahh. My IE is 128 bit... that's probably why it won't work with the site at Poland.

The full link, minus the space embedded in "A TA"... should take you directly to the 19-page document.

Apparently your problem was caused by the fact that you installed Windows from the Win98 cd (and not the hdd):

? A fix added to resolve Intelligent Installer compatibility issues, in the 6.00.003 kit, has a side effect on the stand-alone install method used on Win98. The Win98 CAT file will not be copied over if the user installed the OS from the Win98 CD. If the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath" value points to a read-only device, the CAT file will not be copied to the users HDD. This is only an issue if the system re-enumerates the hdc controller.

Print out the complete document... I believe you'll find the resolution there.

I unsubsribed from this board some time ago, I had the issue resolved before any one had even posted back. Did not like the way this board operated and decided to leave.
I keep getting these "reminder" email though.
This should solve the problem,I found the answer myself before either of you replied. All answers should therefore be rejected. Hope thisss solves the issue.
