registry error

By tshirer ·
I have a PC giving the following error: "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry".
One day this PC was ok, the next day it gave this error when booting up. It says it will try to restore the registry, but keeps coming back with this message and rebooting.
Any ideas?

You did not mention what operating system you have installed
So a solution would be to use the startup disk, insert in the floppy drive and boot computer, select to run setup without cd-rom support, press enter
Reboot
If this does not work, repost the question with the operating system you are using

Your hard drive may have developed a bad sector where part or all of your registry is stored. If your hard drive is failing you should immediately copy everything to another hard drive. You will probably have to reinstall windows after the copy.

I suggest you boot to c prompt by pressing f8 during start up & selecting command prompt only, then type scanreg/fix and press enter, you may want to run scandisk first, but this should solve the problem if it boots in safe mode.
