Registry Error – System file corrupt

This happened on a laptop. Windows xp pro. Will not boot. tried to use last known good. boot in safe mode. and finally tried booting to the recovery console. When asked which os to access i type in 1 and immediately get registry error and it says to shut down to prevent further damage. Any thoughts.
