      Hi,
You need to be a little more specific in problem description.
If you had a HW change/upgrade recently it may be memory compatibility problem. Change your memory!.. For other causes recent changes to your system should be known.
      Good luck

I have had this problem a lot of times.
Boot into dos mode and run ‘scanreg /fix’, and then restart the computer you might have to do that more then ones for the problem to go away.
If after doing it more then you think is enough then you have no choice but restore you registry to a previous known good state to do that:
boot into dos mode and type ‘scanreg /restroe’ a list will come up to choose from which backup you want choose the one you think is good, and then restart.
If you restore the registry all the settings entered after the backup was done will not be there including any hardware/software installations or configurations.

i am having the same problem with a sony
laptop. i have run the scanreg /fix and repair several times with no luck. all it
does is hang up the lapop. also i can not
boot to just a dos prompt, it has to be
      either safemode prompt or stepbystep
confirmation loading only himem.sys. i have
not tried to fdisk yet but i am thinking
this may be the only way to progress. does
anyone have any ideas or know of a good memory testing dos utility and/or a good
disk testing utility. i have tried something
called dmas but that hangs up as well. after
getting to a prompt i can read some files
but the windows/system directory can not
be read, as well as some document files. i
have also tried to start windows from command
line with different switches but no luck there either.

Have you checked for a virus? They do wierd and wonderful things sometimes. This may not be the answer but can’t hurt.
