reinstall notepad.exe

By gbrownlee ·
My OS is XP Home and notepad.exe has gone missing. I checked for any sign of virus pinf but that doesn't seem to be the cause.

How do I reinstall notepad.exe?

Thankyou for your thoughts

Can't you just rerun setup and install just notepad?

I am not sure about XP but in Win2K and 98 you can add or remove Windows Compnents from the Add/Remove programs applet in the control panel. Just select the tab for Windows setup (9 or (Add/remove Windows Compnents in 2K). There should be SOMETHING similar in XP.

P.S. Why tha alias change? Did you move from your 'rural' neighbourhood?

Hello:

Thanks for your idea. That was the first place I tried. Unlike previous systems, notepad isn't included in the add/remove windows components in XP.

I changed my alias because I didn't especially care for it. Sort of used it to define who and where I was and as an 'icebreaker'.

No I haven't moved. I spent half of my life in Calgary before I was able to escape to the countryside. The only way I will be moved from here is against my will, or in a bag.

Sounds like your icon got hosed somehow.....go to Start>>>run>>>and type in notepad and hit enter. IF notepad starts up, it's fine and you only need to make an icon for it.

Perform a search for notepad.exe and once the file has been found, just right click on it and "send to desktop". You can then move it to your start bar, or back into your accessories group where it was originally.

If for whatever reason it's not working properly, you will need to extract it from your Windows CD's. Let us know if you need help with that!

Hello:

I have already searched for the application(?) I used windows explorer and also searced the registry. It is nowhere to be found.

Yes, I need assistance in extracting a new copy from the CD.

Also. it is not enough for me to know that solution x solves problem x. I also would like to know the likely causes as to how/why it has disappeared. I am trying to develope an "indepth" understanding of how computers function.

Hello:

I already know about pinfi. I would know if AVG had moved it to the virus vault.

I want to reinstall notepad.exe directly from the CD. Thanks for your reply.
