Reinstalling 98 over NT Server
Lockedby voxxboxx · about 22 years, 9 months ago
I have a computer running NT Server. I would like to reinstall ’98 but can’t within NT. The ’98 CD wont boot at startup. How can I have NT taken off and 98 put back on?

NT could have a fat 16 or an NTFS partition while Win98 can only read the fat 16 or fat 32 partition. SO you should probably do the following. Go into cmos to tell the computer to boot from CD-rom. Then once in Win98 setup completely re: fdisk thehard drive and format it for either fat16 or fat32. If you ever want to go back to nt then you better stay with fat16. Once you get the correct partition and format scheme on the harddrive setup should work correctly. However the reason of not booting might just be that the cmos wasn’t enabled to do that or that the cdrom was so old that it does’t support boot from cdrom. If this is the case boot your system with an emergency 98 disk, then use dos to get you to the D:\win98 directory and run setup.

To remove an NTFS partition, you must use the NT installation disk. Go into CMOS and set the computer to boot from a CD. Insert the NT CD and restart the computer. The setup will give you the option to delete or create an NTFS partition. Choose the option to delete a partition. After you delete the NTFS partition, restart your computer with the Win98 CD in the CD-ROM drive. You will now be able fdisk and format the computer using the Win98 disk.

Win98 can’t see the NTFS partition. You can either use the NT CD and delete the partition, or you can you a third party app like partition magic, which works particularly nice. Once the NTFS partition is deleted, Win98 setup should run just fine.
