Relay domain problem

By chipw ·
It appears my problem is with relay domains. So I go to start/programs/option pack/iis/smtp and add the computer names for the machines I am testing from. I then send a test message and it gets denied - Relay Denied.
I also have a FreeBSD box running sendmail. The only options I have changed from the default is I added the same machine names to the domain relay list. It works fine.
Why won't Exchange also work?

I should add, this server will not be accepting incoming messages. It will only be used to send messages out, and from on 1 particular computer.

From your description, it sounds as though you are using WinNT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. Routing and relaying through Exchange is handled in the Exchange Admin program. Exchange 5.5 does not use the IIS SMTP service at all; as a matter of fact, havingthe IIS SMTP service running on the box that is running Exchange 5.5 can actually interfere with the operation of Exchange. If this is the version of Exchange you are using, you need to go the Exchange Administrator program, open your IMS connectorand set the routing options on the Routing tab there. Hope this helps!

The relaying problem is no more, now the messages are just stuck in the queue. I've posted another question in regards to that.

I upgraded this box to W2K/E2K and still have the same problem. I have allowed relay via the ESM and going to queues and properties. Relay is allowed for my network as well as by ip address for certain workstations for testing.
The test messages are leaving the clients fine, but they are stuck in the queue, with status of Queued. They will not go any further. I know DNS is set up okay - nslookup and browsing both work.
What am I missing?
