Release of System Resources

By mouldr ·
I have a Win 98 computer on a mixed Novell/NT 4.0 network that is not releasing system resources. Is there a way to fix this?

Release of System Resources

Hi

You can make more system resources available by doing the following:

1. Close programs that do not need to be running.
2. Remove programs from the system tray (Check the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run keys in the registry to see a list of all programs that load during start-up, and check the load=/run= lines in win.ini)
3. Reduce the display resolution.
4. Reduce the number of colours used in the display.
5. Remove any wallpaper.
6. Disable Active Desktop

Hope this helps

Try the following:

1. Close programs not required
2. Check the registry key: hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run and delete any programs you do need to run/load at startup. Also check the run=/load= lines in win, ini, and any DOS programs that may be started during the processing of autoexec.bat
3. Reduce the display resolution.
4. Reduce the number of colours used in the display
5. Remove any wallpaper
6. Disable Active Desktop

HOpe this helps

If you are talking about resources on the pc that runs win98 then just run msconfig in the start/run window and uncheck unneccessary items from the startup tab. Alos make sure that you have all item deleted from the startup folder in the start/programs menu.
If you are talking about the servers not allowing acess to different network resources then you will need to give some more info as to what exactly the issue is.

While the previous answers give very good advice, there is another issue not mentioned - memory leakage. When you open an application, it grabs it's needed resources from the opsys. When the app is closed, it should return those resources to the opsys. When it does not release, this is called memory leakage. A perfect example is MS Powerpoint. The solution to to not open, close and reopen. Keep it open during the day when opening a number of files; closing it only when you are through with Powerpoint for the day. Also, a good idea to restart the PC after using it; although not critical. Other programs you use may also leak.
