Remote Boot/Shutdown

By Cyrixxs ·
Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for remotly waking up a pc, (they have managed NIC's, supporting the feature) in the Windows 2000 environment. At the same time, I also need suggestions on shutting down Computers.

Thanks,

The only "Device" i know of is this that
AMD provides the software components needed to embed pre-OS accessibility into a computer on the network. PXE code can be integrated on a Network Interface Card (NIC) or embedded on a PC motherboard. The PXEcode includes the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) which works in conjunction with a PCnet Ethernet controller-based Network Computer to dynamically generate an IP address for the client node. This allows the PC to establish an IP connection with the network for communication with a remote machine, even before the local operating system loads.

go to http://www.amd.com/products/npd/management/mpp/22146.html for more info

That's not exactly what I'm looking for, as I already have the hardware support.

And the only app I know of is Systems Management server, designed to run on NT4 server, that supports remote diagnostics, startup / shutdown and remote app loading (i think)
SMS is part of the Backoffice suite of products.

netmeeting (free download from Microsoft) allows you the ability to set up remote desktop sharing which will give you the ability to shut down the PC from your Netmeeting console. Its alot like PC Anywhere.

Again, that's not what I need. I'm looking for the ability to shut down computers en masse, like an entire workgroup of computers.

You will need NICs that support wake on Lan, you will also need Motherboards that support the feature - usually there is a small lenght of cable that connects the NIC to the board that actually enables this, and there is usually a setting in the BIOS or NIC Driver to enable support.

Whilst SMS allows you remotely reboot machines, it does NOT allow you the ability to easily shut them down - although that can be using the package distribution software and 3rd party utilities - if you want wakeon LAN functionality you need the machines to go into suspend mode rather than going off. Again this is a BIOS/Power management feature. If you shut the machine down it is OFF, if it is in suspend it is just about on (typically 1-2%) and wake on LANturns it back on.

Again, all the technical requirements have been met, I'm looking for the software to control the features. It can be 3rd Party or MS or whatever
