Remote Control user sessions in 2008 Terminal Server

By jason_k ·
Here's hoping an expert may be able to help me with this one...

Recently, we have installed a new ESXi server, hosting SBS08 and an 08 Terminal Server.
When trying to interact with a users session on the Terminal Server (Remote Control users session), the client receives the error "Your remote desktop session has ended, possibly for one of the following reasons:
The administrator has ended the session
An error occurred while the connection was being established
A network problem occurred"

In the event viewer on the server, I see the error appear:
Event ID 50
"The RDP protocol component "DATA ENCRYPTION" detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client."

Now I have narrowed it down to be isolated to clients running Windows 7. If EITHER the session to be controlled, OR the session to do the controlling is initiated by a windows 7 machine, the error appears. If using Windows XP, it works fine.

Please help...it is getting very difficult to do any remote training with end users.

Kind Regards,
Jason

Or here...

I found this KB-article at MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323497
It's about an older version of the System, but could have something to do with this.

But I'd also dig a bit deeper into services and encryptions available within different versions. Maybe you need to Win7 party to lower the expectations regarding what encryption should be used. (Even if they're called the same, there may be some small details in how they're implemented. After all, it's a proprietary protocol :) )

There's a bunch of links in the bottom of the wikipedia articles, you might some clues there, as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Services

Good hunting!

PS! I don't have Win7 handy (yet), so I can't play with this myself.

One more hint...

This paper on a possible man-in-the-middle attack shows a problem that was around in RDP and may have been fixed around Vista and Win7 might finally have raised the bar a bit for the authentication.
