Remote Desktop

By nitewalker ·
I am trying to use "Remote Desktop Connection" from my XP computers, one is "Media Center" other is XP-Pro. when I click on connect to the remote computers name and then enter my user name and password, it pops up and says "can not connect due to user restrictions"????

Also if I try and use the remote assistance from the Start Menu it does not send the request to the other person?

Need admin rights

by Binary Mind In reply to Remote Desktop

When connecting remotely via remote desktop to an XP Pro or Media Center Edition PC the user account you are using to logon needs to have administrative rights. Another option would be to give a non-admin accounts the right to connect via remote desktop. To do so, open the System applet in Control Panel. Click on the Remote tab. Under Remote Desktop click the Select Remote Users button. Click on Add, Advance, and then Find Now. Pick the user account you want to give the right for remote desktop and confirm with OK. That will do it.
As for the Remote Assistance feature, it is actually quite easy and definitely improved over time. If you decide to invite via Email, make sure Outlook is open for sending the invitation email. Otherwise the message it will sit in the Outbox forever... From there it is a piece of cake. The recipient gets the invitation and needs to double click on the attachment. That initiates the session. Good Luck!

still not working

by nitewalker In reply to Need admin rights

Both user accounts on both computers are members of the Admin Group, and also been added to "remote users" group also. Still when I click on "Remote Desktop Connection" it brings up a window for what computer to connect to and when I click on "connect" it brings up a screen asking for login name and password, when I click OK it then brings up the "logon to computer" screen and when I put in name and password and click okay, I get a msg "unable to log you on due to an account restriction"?????

If I try and ping the computer it times out, but I can ping the gateway?

So still not able to get it to work

Remote Desktop Connection

You must have a password for your user account to connect remotely and you must either be part of the Administrators group or Remote Desktop Users group or both.
