Remote Desktop

By bwinfrey ·
I can connect to a friend's PC, but he cannot connect to mine. I have opened port 3389 without success. I am currently running Norton Internet Security and Linksys. I have disabled both and still no luck.

Any advice?

Just a couple of questions first:

How are these computers connected to each other?

Is the other PC also running a firewall?

Can the systems ping each other?

Can the second system telnet to your system on port 3389? or any other port you have open (use netstat -a to see what your system is listening on) ?

Once you get that info together post the results here and I`ll check it out for you.

The other PC is not networked. I attempted remote desktop using dial-up.

When I run the command netstat -a, the entry is listed as follows: TCP BKWS1:3389 Listening

Can both computers ping each other?

If not perform a tracert to see were it's stopping.

Is the internal firewall built into Windows XP turned off or on - both computer?

Did you have another friend try to connect?

Did you try opening on a different port number?

I actually figured out the solution. I had the wrong IP address in the remote desktop port. Thank you all for help in this matter.
