log on to the server as administrator, and make the user a member of the Remote Desktop Group .. that should allow you to connect

I may be misunderstanding, but it sounds like you are trying to access the XP desktop from the server right? Kinda reads in both directions. Anyway, you should be able to get server -> xp as long as the allow remote connections checkbox is enabled. For xp -> server the user will have to have rights.

If you are in a Windows Domain

Open your user object on your domain controller and check its properties. Look at tewrminal Services Profile, and make sure the "deny this user access to any terminal service connection" is unchecked.
