Remote desktop on XP home?

By electronvolt ·
I have a machine running windows XP home edition (SP2).This machine is on the real or external IP. Even though I have enabled remote desktop on this machine, I cannot connect to this machine from any other machine (with internal as well as external IP) using remote desktop. Does anybody know how to connect to such machine running XP home using remote desktop?

Its not possible. XP Home only has Remote Assistance. You need XP Pro to use Remote Desktop else go for a 3rd party product.

I would recommend a 3rd party client called VNC. It has worked well for me in the past. If you don't have a static IP address, you may want to think about getting a dynamic IP address to keep from changing the IP address configurations. There are many free sites out there.

XP Home only has Remote Assistance - True
VNC for remote connection - Good and free, I recommend UltraVNC as it can authenticate with Windows account info plus you can do file transfers and encrypt via plugins. Remember to open port 5900 for this. If you have dynamic IP, check out Sitelutions for free dynamicDNS service.
