Remote Desktop with mult. users

By courtney ·
On my Win2K network, when I try to remote desktop on a WinXP machine it logs the current user off , so the remote user can get on. Is there away I can have the user in front of the PC stay on and have a different user still remote desktop on behind?

Starting a Remote Desktop Session Appears to Disconnect the Session

The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q282004

SYMPTOMS
When a remote desktop session to a Microsoft Windows XP Professional computer is started, the console session of the target computer appears as though it has restarted and the active session has been disconnected. This is not the case. The console session is now being displayed remotely on another computer as the remote desktop session.

CAUSE
Windows XP Professional only allows one connection to the computer at a time. Invoking a remote desktop session when a console sessionis active will disconnect the console session until you log off or disconnect. The converse is also true: invoking a console session when a remote desktop session is active will disconnect the remote desktop session.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

So, the short answer is no.
I just tested this on my XP box. When you connect to the Remote Desktop, it logs out the locally logged in account.
RDP on XP is a Terminal Services-lite. Only 1 connection allowed at a time.

I don't think that Citrix Metaframe (a real Terminal Services product) would install on XP Pro. Metaframe is a Server-based product. YOu would have to look up what operating systems Metaframe would run on.
Here is the page on Metaframe:
http://www.citrix.com/products/metaframexp.asp

But you can't install Win2K Terminal Services on XP Pro. That I do know.

Good luck

I don't think there is such a program available because of the design of the MS OS. Now depending on what you are trying to do I would suggest a remote program like Dameware, you can try the full version for 30 days and you just can't beat the price. There are several utilities like modifying printers, registry and scheduling etc. If you are wanting the ability to have multiple users access one machine at the same time, then you will need a terminal server and better yet Citrix. Let me knowif you need more info.
