Remote Installation

This is the first tile I'm trying RIS I have W2KS and wanting to install WinXP over the network
Can it be done and what problems might I encounter

This can be done provided:

Your NIC's are PXE compliant
Your hardware meets or exceeds the requirements

Refer to this Knowlegebase article about updating your RIS server to deploy XP images. (note this fix is suppose to be included in SP 3 for 00 server);en-us;304314

Windows Product Activation requires you have unique product IDs so make sure you have them all prior to begining.

While your at it configure group policy for software installation, that way when office dosent work it can repair itself. Any application that has an *.msi file can be used this way. An added bonus is that you can update that application for all machines though Group policy.

On the windows 2000 server cd in the value add folder is a Veritas utility you can use to make *.msi files for any program. Check the MS Knowledgebase for specific information.

(note make sure your software install policies are linked to the computer and not the user; Otherwise when users roam they will have to install all the applications again.)
