Remote Password Change for Local Admin

By RESlusher ·
Is there a way through Group Policy to change the local administrator password?

I've got 5 labs of roughly 40 XP machines each and I'd rather not have to lay hands on every single on of them.

If there's a way to do it through group policy I'd appreciate it if some kind soul can steer me in the right direction.

There is no way to use GPO to change a password. You can only rename accounts with this. You would have to buy third party software to do this, or maybe a free/shareware program somewhere. Check this out... http://www.itlocation.com/en/software/prd50263,,.htm

depends on your definition of "lay hands". If by that you mean you don't want to have to go through a process 40 times, go ahead and stop reading now. If you just don't want to have to physically move, then here you go.

The easiest way to do this would be while logged in as a domain admin. right click my computer->computer management. action->connect to another computer. from here, you can go to local users and groups, users, and set the password on the local administrator account.

Reset Local Password Pro 2.0!

WOW! This is great tool. I have been searching for something like this for a long time. It's truly worth the $69 bucks. I would highly recommend installing it on a server instead of your personal workstation; just in case you have to re-image your machine somewhere down the line and need to reinstall the application (you know how often us Administrators re-image our workstation a year).

Thanks guys,

Used this a few weeks ago to reset every administrator password in the domain.
(I hate it when net admins get fired!)

Try Google*ing "change password script." I found one that would recurse through an OU structure but lost it, and the one above suited my purpose.

Good luck!

Create a simple bat file with the following command Net User localadminaccount newpassword and apply it as a startup script in the relevant OU's. It is recommended that you also set permissions to for the bat file for domain administrators and system priveledges. For extra security you could use a vbs script and encrypt it using screnc.exe from microsoft.
