Remote Reboot of Notebooks

By dfields ·
I support several hundred Panasonic CF-27 Toughbooks located among several locations (perhaps you have had the unfortunate opportunity to see these in police cars). They are using Windows 98 and are connected to a NT4 workstation/gateway. They also have wireless modems. The gateway and wireless modems are connected to the WAN.

At the end of the day the users dock their unit on a special rack. Overnight, a software process and replication is begun. During these processes, their is a reboot. But sometimes Win98 hangs, thus the process is incomplete.

Is there a way to remotely reboot these units? There is no wake on LAN and there is not network connection(?) during the hang.

Do these notebooks ever attached to a network physically, (i.e. 10/100)? What edition of Win98? There have been widely reported and documented problems with rebooting using 2nd edition (there is a patch available at microsoft.com). Does the lockup happen on all the notebooks? If it happens to just a few it could be a number of things that lock it up, i.e. locked system apps, etc. If it is most of them, check the edition and turn screensavers off if the updates are done locally.

The only way to accomplish this that is provided by Microsoft would be to use an SMS server and its Remote Tools. There may be a third party option for doing this but I do not know of it.

Perhaps you could set up a mechanism to power cycle the notebooks, setup a timeout on the reboot period and if the system isn't responding by the end of the time out period, your device could powercycle the notebook. You would probibly need to remove the batteries and setup and external charging station for them though.
