Removable disk issue.

by mike . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

I’m currently having issue with explorer not recognising USB flash drives. When I connect one, it installs ok in windows, appears ok in device manager and is also listed in disk management as having no issues.

I have eliminated the minute possibility of hardware issues by testing several drives and different ports, and even installing a new PCI USB card – none of which have changed this behaviour.

Still it does not appear anywhere in explorer, yet I can access it without issue through cmd.exe.

The machine, as standard, was using a mapped volume and I am aware of the issues with drive letter assignation when you have a mapped drive. For this reason I have removed the the mapped drive from the system (after initially assigning it a high letter in the first place).

The machine is also on a domain. I have checked the user/group permissions and there should be no issue with using a flash drive. To entirely eliminate domain issues I have continued diagnosis only when logged onto the local machine itself.

So I have a machine with no mapped drives, not logged into a domain, with no hardware issus that will not recognise removable drives in explorer, but can access the drive ok through cmd.

If anyone has any ideas I’d be greatly appreciative.
