Remove "Connect to Internet" Icon

By cruncher_1 ·
Have a W2K domain with new W2K Pro workstation. Do not use profiles. How can I remove the "Connect to the Internet" icon when a domain user logs on to the new workstation for the first time? We don't need the icon, each user is able to connect to the internet through our proxy server by double clicking the IE icon. Have tried removing it from all users desktop, but it appears for each new user.

Any help appreciated.

Remove "Connect to Internet" Icon

This answer is more than I needed. The registry need not be edited. First, I had to change the folder options so the default user was shown when I right clicked on the start menu and explored all users. After I discovered that, it was a piece of cake. I created duser, set it up like I wanted, copied ntuser.dat to a floppy, logged in as adminstrator on the machines that needed that default and copied the ntuser.dat file over the default user ntuser.dat. Thank you all for your input.

The reason for this is each new user gets a copy of the default user profile when she/he logs in.
One easy way to change the default user profile is to overwrite it.
Log in as a new user. Delete the icon. Log out.
Log in as administrator. Copy the previous users profile over the default user profile.
That should do it.

See comment above. This is actually what I did by using ntuser.dat, since I have no profiles folders. Thanks for your help.

In the Desktop folder for either the "All Users" or "Default User" profile you will find that icon. Delete it there and you should not see it again.

That was the first thing I tried. The icon did not show up there. Thanks for your post.
