remove demoted AD server

By MOJOCHANG ·
A quick question: i demoted a AD server successfully. it cannot be found from AD sites and services snap-in, but still remains in Domain Controllers folder under AD users and computers snap-in. right click and check its properties, its role is "workstation or server" already. my question is "is it safe enough if i just delete or move to computers folder. thanks

remove demoted AD server

by Joseph Moore In reply to remove demoted AD server

This problem is discussed in Technet article Domain Controller Server Object Not Removed After Demotion (Q216364):
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q216364
(please remove any spaces)

Basically, everything should have been deleted during the DCPROMO demotion process (including any entries in NTDS Settigns). If everything is gone from the server, then yes, you can safely delete it from the folder.
If there is still stuff listed under the server, then you need to run Ntdsutil to clean it out before you delete it.
Please read the article for clarification.

hope this helps
