Remove email hung-up in "Outbox"?

By mhiggins ·
I am using MS Outlook 2000/Windows 98. There is an email hung-up in a clients "Outbox". There is no way I am able to delete/remove the email. I keep receiving a message that the MAPI spooler has already begun sending the message and it can not be deleted. I tried uninstalling MS Office but this did not clear out the "outbox". How can I get rid a this 3 day old email message?

Remove email hung-up in "Outbox"?

There may be an easier way, but this one worked for me when one guy had same problem. Use export and export each folder to a .pst file independantly, not exporting outbox. Then completely remove office2000. Re-install Office 2000 and import the .pstfiles again.
Seems like a lot of work, but it was worth it.

This is the procedure I used when removing MS Office. After reinstalling and opening Outlook all of the contacts, etc., re-appeared. This took me by surprise, as I thought they would have been deleted during the unistallation process. Maybe I should try this procedure a second time.

Run Inbox Repair Tool on the PST file that is creating this problem. Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Inbox Repair Tool.

Realize that Inbox Repair Tool is a 8 phase process... depending on the size of the PST... it could take awhile. IRT has fixed several "stuck" messages for me.

There is no "Inbox Repair Tool" option in the specified path you have given above. It's my outbox I am dealing with.

Actually, Anna was probably right. Repairing the "inbox" is probably what is needed. She did give you the default location for the shortcut, but it appears to not be set up there in Office 2000. The name of the tool is perhaps a misnomer - perhaps it should have been called the "personal folders repair tool", but rest assured, the inbox repair tool repairs ALL the folders, including the outbox.

You are looking for an executable called "SCANPST.EXE". For Office 2000, it may be in C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\Mapi\1033\95\. (An aside, 1033 means English in Microsoftese) For Office 97, it may be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\.

I am making an assumption that since you are using Windows 98 that you are also not usingExchange Server for your e-mail, and your inbox is in a file called a "Personal Folder". If you are not sure where it is, you could just search for a file with a .pst extension, that has today's date (since you used Outlook today). The C:\Windows folder is a good bet, since that is the default location. Alternatively, open Outlook, look at your Tools/Services, and then the Properties of the "Personal Folders" (the default name - you may have to look at everything 'till you find a .pst file if you are not familiar with this screen.) (I am assuming that you only have only one personal folder, but if you have more than one, no harm in fixing them all.) The location of the folder is in the "path" on the properties screen.

Close Outlook, anduse the inbox repair tool on the personal folder. When the option to make a backup appears, it is not a bad idea to choose yes.

This, and other possible fixes for your problem are explained at:

Thanks for your help. Although vague in some areas, your answer was the most descriptive and useful. After completing the scan, no damaged files were found. After several attempts in other areas, I finally went in through the back door and from explorer, deleted the "outlook.pst" file. When I opened Outlook back up I was prompted to create a new Personal Folder, in which I did and then imported my copied "inbox, contacts, etc" files.
