Remove IE 5

By richie.bohr ·
I am in need of completely removing IE 5 from several desktops. This has proved quite a difficult task. I tried using add/remove programs but when I try to install IE 4 SP2, the system states there is a previous version intalled. I am at a loss. Anysuggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Check out Microsoft's Technet site at www.microsoft.com/technet/support and look for this article #Q217344. This will give you info on uninstalling IE5 and any problems that may occur with the installation. Also, delete all files in the temp folders and check the registry for any references to IE5. The above article shows the registry files for IE5. (Note: be sure to backup the registry before editing!)
Good luck!

Also, Brian Livingston ran a series of columns on this in March of 1999. Go to www.infoworld.com and check the archives.

Try using regclean.exe (the download from the MS site). When you run it after the uninstall, it should find the registry entries that are tricking IE 4 into thinking there's another installation already on-board, and delete them automatically. It will then leave a file on the machine to restore the deleted registry entries if there is a problem.
