Boot from a startup disk and format the hard drive.

Well, since you most likely have the NTFS file system, you can't even do that.

By nature, unless you set up a dual boot environment, or performed an upgrade installation, there is no simple way to uninstall an operating system.

Other than your data files, there is nothing on your hard drive that you will be able to use if you remove Windows.

About the only way to remove an OS is to install the hard drive as a secondary drive in another system and manually remove the OS related files.
This includes most of the files in the root folder along with most in the Windows (i386) (WinNT) folders.

All applications on the drive will be useless, and will need to be re-installed when you install a new OS on the drive.

You are best off to back up your data files, identify and download the latest hardware drivers, format the drive, and start over from scratch.

run fdisk from a boot disk and delete the w2k partitions. If necessary remember to backup your data before that.
