Removing a program

By jshaw ·
Ok, every time I boot up McAfee Virusscan starts up. I have a different virus scanner now (the McAfee is WAY out of date), so I don't need it and would like to uninstall this thing. It's not under the add/remove programs, so what should I do? I went to delete it, and of course it told me this was a no-no. Please help!

Look in the McAfee folder on your PC You might find an .exe file called uninstall... or something similar. All Add/Remove programs does is look for and run that program.

You may also have to edit your autoexec.bat file to delete the line which starts c:\windows\command\scandisk... which will continue to generate a little error every time you boot, even if all the other files are gone....

Was this PC upgraded from Win3.1? Check the WIN.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory for a load= line that might load the scanner.

If this doesn't work, try out this app; Startup Cop.

http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000YKL,.html
Here's the description from ZDNET:
When Windows starts up, it automatically launches a number of programs for you. Some of these come from the Startup folder. Windows also looks in six other locations for files that should be launched at startup.Startup Cop helps you handle problems with programs that are automatically launched at startup by listing them and letting you disable, enable, or delete them. You can save the list of programs that are currently enabled or disabled as a profile that can be restored at a later time. Startup Cop was written by Neil J. Rubenking, and first appeared in PC Magazine April 20, 1999 (v18n0.

I guess I should have also added there is no uninstall program for this. Also, I looked in Autoexec.bat to just eliminate the line that starts this up and it isn't loaded from there. Where else can I look?

Follow these steps to uninstall Macafee
1. Find the uninstall.exe in macfee folder and double click on it and the program will be uninstalled.
2. If the above file does not exist or is corrupted, follow the following steps.
3. Install TweakUI in the computer.
4. Delete the macafee folder from its location.
5. Remove the corresponding macafee entries from the autoexec.bat file.
6. Use TweakUI from the control panel to remove the macafee entry from the registry. This will remove macfee entry from the add/remove software box.
