Removing an old DC

by rob.wilcox1 . Updated 25 years, 6 months ago

We have a problem trying to remove AD from one of our Domain Controllers. We are of course running a DCPROMO, it tells us that it’s already a DC and asks us if we want to demote it to a member server.

It is a machine called OLD-MACHINE, and it has as it’s primary DNS server itself. (Each of our DC’s has DNS running on it).

We go a few steps through the wizard and are asked for a username and password from the enterprise admins group, which we supply, then a second or so later we get the “progress dialog box” appear, and then the following error…

“The operation failed becase:

The Directory Service failed to replicate off changes made locally.

The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure”

We checked out the MS KB which said that we should put the machine’s IP address as the preferred DNS Server, but we already did that.

Please help

Thanks
