    Removing Documents From Start Menu

    Locked

    by ponygurl ·

I am in the process of creating a user profile which will severly restrict users on a “public access” Windows 95 PC. I need to remove the Documents and Help menu options from the Start Menu but so far have not found any documentation on how to do this. Please advise.

I use TweakUI. The original version for W95 is part of the Windows 95 Power Toys package.

The older version for W95 has a tab labeled IE4 options (or something like that)

Among the options, is the option to disable recent documents.

I knowthat this is a registry edit, but have not taken the time to find the exact key that is modified.

The latest version of TweakUI may not have the option.

If you need it, contact me by either leaving your e-mail address, or through the peer mail, and I can e-mail you the older version.

Charlie – There’s an Explorer tab but it doesn’t have the option you mentioned. There is a Change Locations button for Recent Documents option on the General tab. And a Clear Document History At Logon on the Paranoia tab. I had previously removed all of IE using IEradicator. Would this have removed the IE40 tab?

To be honest, I just can’t remember if, and which versions had the tab for IE4. Or, if it shows up without IE 4.

It may be the second version that I have.

Version 1.33 which I believe is the current version from Microsoft DOES not have the option.

I will take a look through my reference material, and see if I can find the specific registry key to edit.

I looked through my reference material, and the registry on my W98 box.

I think I see why there is no easy answer to removing the Documents section of the start menu.

It is buried in a long string that defines the menu order.

As I said, I can’t remember which version of TweakUi has the IE4 tab.

I have several versions that I could send you.

I downloaded version 1.33 and loaded it but there isn’t any IE tab. But v.1.33 does have the IE tab on my Win2K machine, so I think the IE tab doesn’t show on the stripped-down PC because I removed Internet Explorer from the PC using IEradicator. So TweakUI is not helping me here. I guess the answer would be a registry hack…

To the answer in #2, TweakUI 1.33, does allow you to remove the Documents and Help menu. It is under the IE tab of TweakUI.

You can download TweakUI 1.33 from several locations including Microsoft’s web site.
