Is it possible to completely remove the IE from a win98 2nd edition? I can see no uninstall process?

Microsoft will tell you it can't be done.

But check out 98Lite. It'll do that and more. You can download a free preview edition here:

Yes, You can try. Ie puts many hooks into your system registry and sometimes there are problems when you deinstall it. Go to Control Panel>Add/remove programs> Iexplorer and tools. If you have an entry click remove and then where on most programs you have an option for remove, you have install/repair/put to earlier release. Click earlier release and hope for the best. You can also try loading same version you have from microsoft>download> iexplorer product. Try installing it and you will probably be given the option to return to old version. Iexplorer needs to be removed before trying to repair win98 software if it has a problem. Also IE needs removed or updated for a Iexplorer problem. You might be better off putting Ie5.5 with sp1 if youcan't go back. Ie5.01 with sp1 is my browser of choice. It seems fairly stable as compaired to 5.5. I have not tried 5.5 with sp1 yet.

Yes you can do it with 98lite. I do not suggest doing it. The reason that microsoft got sued is because IE is a part of win98. I find IE works the best with win98. I did use www.opera.com it work pretty good but there were some problems. Netscape is slow.

Why? I mean... what is the point? It is an awful lot of trouble to go through when you can just get rid of the icons or install a different browser!

I've been with Microsoft a along time and if I've learned nothing else, I've learned that Microsoft does not put out programs that can be deleted or uninstalled without creating "HAVOC". Fortunately we don't have to use them. You can down load 98 Lite but why. Delete all the short cuts, go to internet properties and change the browser, be sure that the check box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser" has a check mark in it. This is important otherwise youwill get an error message when windows boots up. Reboot from shut down, and you're ready.
