Is there any way to remove Internet Explorer from the desktop w/o removing it from the computer?

Go Start\Settings\Control Panel. Double click on Internet (or Internet Options). Click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down until you see "Show Internet Explorer on the desktop" and uncheck it. Click on OK. That should do it.

Here is another solution. Remember to backup the registry first.
This option hides the Internet Explorer icon from the Windows desktop.

Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Value Name: NoInternetIcon
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)
