Removing network neighbourhood

By Achat ·
I have a problem of my nosey users using the Network Neighbourhood from Win 98 Clients to "surf" the network and get into other machines.

Though we have shares existing it is becomming a problem to administer and maintain it.
I would like to know if the network neighbourhood can be disabled on the win 98 client for all users except admin.

Sounds to me like your company has very weak and inaffective policies and management. If the security was setup correctly you would not have problems with these people getting into servers they have no business to be in. The second part is management that does not adhere to an exceptable usage policy where each employee is required to sign the policy. After a few employees are either reprimanded, demoted, fired, and/or prosecuted for their internal hacking of the network, your problem will go away.
The network neighborhood is a tool to allow users to navigate to machines that they may occasionally need to do their jobs. Don't fix the problem by jimmy rigging the symptoms.

There is a lot of tool that is available for downloads.

TweakUI - http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui
GS98 - http://www.arcsoftware.co.uk/downloads.htm

(remove spaces)

So two option coming from Pinoy_Teknik, If you use TweakUI it will going to hide Network Neighborhood ICON, and others that you want...

.....but if the user need to used that if their on jobs its a problem.

In GS98, with this tool you can make a rule to you network and desktop.

I think its up to you what is better...

If you send me an e-mail I'll send you a simple registry "Lock" and "Unlock" file so that all you need to do is copy the files to floppy disk and then use the disk as a "Key" to activate/deactivate Net Neighbourhood on the machines of your choice.
I go with a "necessity is the mother of invention policy" and sometimes one has to fix the problem first and then sort out a policy / security long-term answers.

PJ
